Letter 4 to The Jewish Day Primary School

Dear Trailblazers,

We do not live on farms. We live in houses and apartments. Only one student Coura lived on a farm.

There are 6 students who have travelled or lived in the USA. Malik lived in Bronx New York for 8 years. Dauda lived in Chicago for 2 years and Maryland for 1 year. Fatima lived in South Carolina for 5 years.  Amina lived in Maryland for 1 year. Maryam visited Los Angeles. Alioune visited New York and has visited France and Mauritania (West Africa). Coura never went to the USA but she has visited Spain. Awa has never been to the USA but she lived in France and has visited Mali, Ghana, Tunisia and Cote d’Ivoire (all countries in Africa) and India. Karima has visited Mali, Ghana, and France. Cheikh and Mame Anta have never left Senegal.

What we eat in Senegal is varied, depending on where you live. For breakfast, most people eat French bread with butter, natural tea or coffee, or millet based porridges.  For lunch there are many dishes. Thiebou jen, rice and fish is the national dish. It is a popular dish that is made with fish, rice, tomatoes, seafood, and many vegetables. Soupa kanja is another popular dish. It is white rice with a heavy sauce made with gombo, palm oil, fish and seafood. A lot of people eat rice and a sauce for lunch. The sauce usually contains one or more of the following vegetables: carrots, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, okra, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, eggplant etc. Senegalese eat mostly dishes containing fish or meat (beef). Millet is a cereal grown in Senegal. The millet is changed into flour. Using hot water, the flour is processed by the hand to form small grains. Then it is cooked by vapour. The grains are used to make couscous (thiere).

In our school, all grades have just one class except in one of the preschool classes (MidSection) where there are 2 classes. Each class has 15 students maximum.

We would like to talk to you by Skype and see you before school finishes. We would also like to keep in contact with you. We would love for you to come and visit us. (A homestay would be nice! Mme ZamZam). We liked writing to you!

Sincerely,

Faraasha Grade 4
