Dear Fourth Graders in Dakar,
We are very happy to be partnering with you. What are your names? Our names are Rachel, Jacob, Joey, Anya, Micah, Ezra, Matan, Nava, Yona, Evan, Rochelle, Tamar, Shira, Josie, Gabriel, Naomi, and Dalia. Our teacher’s name is Mrs. Goldstein. What are your favorite foods? Some of our favorites are pizza, macaroni and cheese, strawberries, other fruit, and candy. What religion are you? We are all Jewish. What language do you speak? We all speak English and Hebrew (Hebrew as a second language).
We’re going to ask you things, and comment on things that have to do with clothing. Here’s some facts about us: We don’t wear uniforms, but we are required to wear blue and white, or our school T-shirt on Friday. The boys have to cover their heads, also we do however have a dress code, which is: We are not allowed to wear flip flops, tank tops, or shorts shorter than your mid thigh. We also have a few questions for you: Do you have uniforms? If you don’t do you have a dress code? What do you wear on a normal basis? If you are a girl do you have to keep your hair up or can you let it down? Do boys have to cover their heads? In winter we wear long pants, long sleeves and boots. In summer do you wear something different than in winter?
Our school Jewish Primary Day School is located on 16th street, next to Rock Creek Park, in Washington D.C USA in North America. Washington D.C is the capital of the USA. Parts of DC have big buildings but where JPDS is the buildings and houses are mostly 2 stories high. 16th street is one of the most crowded streets in DC. The farthest away someone lives from school is 50 minutes, the closest is 5 minutes. How do you get to school by bus car train by foot or bicycle? Some of us go carpool and the rest go on buses. If you have buses how many do you have? Our school has four buses.
In the winter the temperature is from 0 - 10c (30-60f) and in the summer the temperature is from 20-35c (60-90f). What do your neighborhoods look like? Are your houses big? Some of ours are. Do you get to see elephants a lot? We don’t. We have squirrels. Do you? What’s around your school? Buildings or houses or parks…. or what?
We have 3 fourth grade classrooms with about 17 kids in each. How big is your grade? Our school is a Jewish private school so we learn Hebrew (the jewish language) and judaics (learning about the religion itself). We also have Tefillah (prayer) and we celebrate the jewish holidays. We know you have a muslim school, what is it like? Our desks are in groups of 4 with a white board at the front of the classroom. We have supplies and bulletin boards around the room. What's your classroom like? We have 5 math classes and 3 general studies classes. We have two school buildings, and our school goes from pre-kindergarten to 6th grade. Every day we have a different schedule. What’s your schedule? How many teachers are there in your grade? This is what the education is like at our school. We would love to know more about yours.
In our school we use computers, projectors, lights, and more. Do you have computers? In our school we have chromebooks. We have a projector in our class. For some of our work we use computers (Chromebooks). Do you have technology?
